THE THEME: Embodying the Dark Beloved
There is an Iñupiaq word, qarrtsiluni, which means “sitting together in the darkness, waiting for something to happen – to break or burst forth.” It comes from Iñupiaq traditions of honoring a whale with a new song. The [men] retreat to a special house, in darkness and in stillness. They sit there in qarrtsiluni and speak of beautiful things until a new song bubbles to the surface. In this extreme time, we are listening for a new song. In the potent and magic company of our sisters, we side-step past the old songs, into a new and complex harmony. We trust that we will not simply repeat the same old song, the one that has now backed us into this shocking, precarious and still exquisitely precious moment.
We gather in the dark of the year to sit together, to let what is known fall away so that the great unknown may settle Herself in our hearts, our bodies, our cells, not to be known, exactly, but to be danced, sung, and most deeply felt and embodied. Daily practice of somatic meditation continues to be our foundation, to which this year we’ll add somatic heart practices (traditionally called bodhicitta practice, meaning practices of the awakened heart). As in prior years, we’ll also take our practice outdoors in both formal and informal ways. Anne will offer daily yoga/movement in the late afternoon and evenings we’ll have council and darkness practice. Nancy will again bring the wisdom of the cetacean master teachers. There will be time in the afternoon for you to do your own practice.
Retreatants will be asked to formally commit to holding silence throughout the retreat, except during council circle and other discussion/Q&A times.

What people say about retreats with Anne and Nancy…
I have had the joy and privilege of working with the guides for this special retreat — Anne, Nancy, Jess and Camina. I know the beautiful qualities of presence, wisdom, skill and care they each bring to their teaching and service to others. I imagine within the sacred circle of this retreat the gifts of their interwoven support will be beyond my imaginings!- Wendy Walsh
Anne and Nancy bring compassionate holding with sacred knowledge and a love of the wild. These retreats are strong medicine, drink deep.- Linda Forman
I felt so taken care of in this retreat, and it modeled how to better take care of myself. The practices carefully unfolded so I never felt separated from them…they were organically natural and I felt that I belonged inside all of them.- Shirley Ghilotti

About Anne and Nancy
Anne Dellenbaugh is a meditation and yoga instructor and a wilderness guide. A former Zen priest, Anne has trained extensively in Zen, Vipassana and Vajrayana Buddhism. She is currently studying Pure Consciousness with Qigong Master Mingtong Gu (The Chi Center). She is also a senior student of Reginald A. Ray, PhD (Dharma Ocean). Anne is a Registered Yoga Teacher (Yoga Alliance e-RYT 500), having completed four Yoga Teacher Training courses. Through her company, HER WILD SONG: Wilderness Journeys for Women, founded in 1990, Anne has guided hundreds of women down rivers, up mountains and across the desert.
In 1990, Anne wrote that she “founded HER WILD SONG in the belief that women’s spiritual lives are vitally important and that nourishing our spirits with wind and trees and river and sea is restorative not only to ourselves, but to others around us and even to the Earth herself.” Thirty years later, she agrees and feels it is even more important for women (alone and in community) to explore meditation practices grounded in our female bodies.
Anne was diagnosed with “terminal” cancer in 1996 and healed almost entirely with complementary protocols, including Zhineng Qigong. Since then, she has continued to explore and train in many somatic and healing traditions/lineages. For over 20 years, she had a spiritual counseling practice, specializing in work with cancer and other life-threatening illness.
Nancy Windheart is an internationally respected animal communicator, animal communication teacher, and Reiki Master-Teacher based in Cornville (near Sedona), Arizona. She teaches animal communication and animal Reiki classes and provides animal communication consultations for clients worldwide. Nancy is a Reiki Master-Teacher and professional member of the International Association of Reiki Professionals, Registered Yoga Teacher (Yoga Alliance RYT 200), and an ordained minister through the Universal Life Church. In her animal communication classes and retreats, Nancy integrates her training in yoga, Reiki, and meditation to help people become more fully grounded in their bodies, and open to their intuitive, receptive awareness. Nancy guides people to experiences of deep presence, which is the state of being where we are able to receive telepathic communication most clearly. Nancy’s yoga practice has been most influenced by her teacher Rama Jyoti Vernon, and Buddhist teachers in several traditions. Nancy holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in music performance and is a former professional classical pianist and music professor. She brings her musical experience to the trip with her Native American flute.
Nancy and Anne’s collaboration originated in the yoga teacher training programs and retreats that they have done together, including those with Amy Weintraub, Angela Farmer, and Rama Jyoti Vernon. They also share a deep resonance with the somatic meditation teachings of the Vajarayana Buddhist tradition as held through Reginald Ray and the Dharma Ocean lineage. Through experiencing and sharing these deep practices, they discovered their common calling to help women connect deeply and intimately with themselves and the Spirit within all life. Together, Anne and Nancy bring a synergy of their gifts, experience, and expertise, as well as their love of outdoor adventure, the natural world, and deep spiritual practice to their work as facilitators and trip leaders.
